The Daily Grind owner opens Tavola Gigi's Italian Restaurant

The Daily Grind owner Georgianne Gennette “Gigi” Zavaglia opened her first restaurant after traveling the world.

Now the Mount Pleasant resident is bringing the flavors of Italy to Tavola Gigi’s, 437 S. Mission St.

Zavaglia closed the Daily Grind to open Tavola Gigi’s, which means GiGi’s Table in Italian, today to fulfill her love of Italian food and culture.

“We’ve just become such a fast food society and people have … forgotten to just savor and relax,” she said

Pizza King re-opens under new ownership

Lorraine and Dan Kirchner gave Pizza King a thumbs-up after trying it for the first time Monday in their new location.

“What we were really enjoying was the homemade flavor,” said Lorraine, of Mount Pleasant.

Two years after an arson fire destroyed the original Pizza King at 714 E. Preston St., a new location opened Nov. 2 at 600 N. Mission St.

Wet Monkey turning into wet bar

The Wet Monkey Sub Shack can now wet your whistle with alcoholic beverages. In addition to serving subs, owner John Devine said the Wet Monkey, 4855 E. Bluegrass Rd., was granted a full liquor license and now is serving beer and liquor. Devine said the move is needed to give the business more marketability, as well as to help business.

Biggby Coffee on Blue Grass Rd. closes

Mount Pleasant residents who love Biggby Coffee are out of luck. On Monday, the East Lansing-based chain coffee shop closed the 4445 E. Blue Grass Road location in Union Township. People who have since come to get their coffee have found the doors locked and lights off with a notice taped to building.

As Pittsburgh and Arizona restaurant and bar owners are undoubtedly preparing for the frenzy that is Super Bowl Sunday, several local restaurants are also getting ready. Several Mount Pleasant establishments, including the Blue Gator Sports Pub and Grill, Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar and O'Kelly's Sports Bar & Grill are all hosting Super Bowl parties or offering specials this Sunday during the face-off between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers for Super Bowl XLIII, in Tampa, Fla.

A 33-year-old taste of Mount Pleasant has found a new location, but kept the same south of the border style. The Pita Pit, located at 1620 S. Mission St., reopened in December after closing this past March, when the former owner left town owing many employees money. "I've been here two times now," said New Lothrop junior Paul Malott. "The pitas are by far my favorite thing.

Bar-B-Cutie leaves 27 out of work

A barbecue restaurant in Union Township has closed its doors after just two years in business. Bar-B-Cutie, 4520 Collegiate Way, shut its doors on Nov. 16. The restaurant employed 27 people and was owned by Dr. Keith and Teddie Sikora of Mount Pleasant. Employees at the restaurant, the first franchise location in Michigan, reported slow business and personal issues between the owners. The restaurant did not serve alcohol, and had not applied for a liquor license, said William Woodruff, Union Township zoning administrator. Future plans for the site are undetermined.
